Our Classroom Environment Expectations...

Our presence and active, thoughtful participation are significant elements in the classroom environment. Consequently, I expect you to attend classes, participate in the planned activities, and assist in developing a classroom environment where we all can learn and develop our skills.

With a charged, intellectually challenging, academic atmosphere, this should stimulate you as students and me as an instructor to be an active participant in the class and to seek each others' opinions and reactions.  High energy in a classroom is evident when it is expressed in enthusiasm for exploring yourself and learning about your profession.
As one of the instructors, I hope you see me as being open, caring, respectful of your ideas, and showing empathy to your interactions.  If at anytime, you believe you are not getting from the class what you need, please let me know.  Whenever you have questions or comments, please contact me via e-mail or set up an appointment to meet with me.

Since you are a member of the College of Education & Human Services, standards and expectations appropriate for successful professional counselors will be the norm. Such standards as personal responsibility, empathy, readiness to work, uses good communication skills, flexibility, and an inquiring, reflective mind provide the framework for our interactions in this class.  I hope there are numerous informal interactions with each other, and there exists a supportive and friendly peer atmosphere to develop colleague relationships, which will be invaluable in the future.

The standard that I use in judging professionalism is whether or not students' behaviors or attitudes would be accepted in the professional counseling career. Consequently, late work is not accepted. Attendance is required and noted. (There are exceptions to these standards depending upon the nature of the emergency.)

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover."
